With one of the loudest sound system in sub-saharan Africa in their possession, Jah Bricks and the Angolan Disciples have spent the last 20 years building a reputation as one of the most inspiring reggae collectives on the African continent.
Coming into existence in response to the day-to-day violence of Angola during the 1980s, Jah Bricks, a devout rastafarian of Jamaican origin established a collective of inspired young men to bring respite to besieged communities of the local region through music. Consisting predominantly of ex-freedom fighters from the ongoing civil war, Jah Bricks and his followers set about building their now infamous sound system from within their walled compound in Angola’s remote highlands.
Once completed, the group took their sound and the latest records imported from Jamaican around the country to huge crowds whilst preaching their profound rastafari beliefs. Now 24 years in existence, the group, with their trademark red military fatigues, has earnt a reputation as one of the most exhilarating live sound systems on the continent. Due to the remoteness of these performances, very little of the group has ever been recorded, and much of their reputation outside of Africa is forged in the words of the lucky few that have been able to see them in action.
Recently, a performance at the north-eastern border between Angola and DR Congo was recorded and sent back to the UK from an unknown source. This is thought to be the first ever recording of one of the collective’s live sets. It is unclear whether the selector during this session is Jah Bricks himself or other members of the group, but we believe that it is most likely both who contributed to this insight into one of the most enigmatic African sound systems.
